(Davenport, IA) -- A 12 year old is dead following a shooting in Davenport on Thursday.
Davenport Police officers were called to the 1300 block of Marquette Street for a report of gunfire around 3:40 Thursday afternoon. Once on the scene, investigators located two people with gunshot wounds.
During a press conference on Friday, Davenport Police Cheif Paul Sikorski said two minors were victims of the shooting. Devell Johnson Jr. was transported to Genesis Medical Center East, where he was pronounced dead. The other minor involved was treated and released.
Thursday night 18 year old De’An A. Humphrey, of Hannibal, Missouri, was booked in the Scott County Jail in connection with the incident. Chief Sikorski announced Humphrey is not a person of interest in the shooting and that he was riding bikes with the victims at the time of the shooting. Humphrey is charged with interference with official acts and carrying weapons. Bond was set Friday morning at $100,000 cash-only. He has a preliminary hearing on April 30th.
Investigators say they were told the group was shot at by suspects in a vehicle that drove by when the group was on their bikes. Sikorski said that preliminary information indicated that Johnson, the injured juvenile, Humphrey, and another juvenile were riding bicycles in the alley between 13th and 14th streets west of Marquette when a vehicle driving north on Marquette stopped at the ally and fired several at the four.
“Initial information indicates this shooting was not a random act and the investigation remains ongoing,” he said.
Sikorski said while officers were responding to the scene, a 911 call was received about a suspicious person, later identified as Humphrey, in the area. According to an arrest affidavit, Humphrey took off from officers and refused to stop when ordered by police. He discarded a pink jacket he was wearing and a 9mm Taurus pistol with an extended magazine before this arrest, according to the affidavit. Officers found the items near a basement window of a home where the Humphrey had run. He does not have a permit to carry a gun in Iowa, according to the affidavit.
Sikorski said no suspects have been arrested in the shooting of Johnson and the juvenile.
