Former Alabama State Trooper Shoots District Attorney In The Face

The district attorney for Alabama’s 17th Judicial Circuit was shot near his office by a former Alabama state trooper. Greg Griggers was in his car returning from lunch when he was ambushed by Steve Smith, Jr. and shot in the face. A nearby Demopolis police officer returned fire and killed Smith, Jr.

Griggers suffered "minor" injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.

U.S. Attorney for Alabama’s Northern District Jay E. Town issued a statement following the attack.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Greg and his family. District Attorney Griggers is a dedicated public servant and an honorable man. This serves as yet another reminder of the perils and dangers that law enforcement at every level face daily.”

Authorities have not said why the former trooper attacked Griggers, but he was questioned in a 1996 shooting at the home of  Sumter County Circuit Judge Eddie Hardaway, who was the first black judge in the county.
