Police identify woman killed in Rock Falls apartment building fire

(Rock Falls, IL) -- A woman killed in a Friday night Rock Falls apartment fire is being identified.

Rock Falls Police say 59 year old Eunice Karr was killed in the fire at Civic Plaza I. Crews responded to a report of a fire around 9:45 Friday night in the 1100 block of 5th Avenue. The nine-story apartment building is occupied by more than 100 residents who have been displaced due to the fire. Most of them are elderly and handicapped residents.

An investigation for the cause of the fire is being conducted by the Illinois Fire Marshal’s office with the assistance of Rock Falls Police and Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services.

Rock Falls police wanted to recognize and thank the following for their assistance: Salvation Army, Red Cross, First Student, Winning Wheels, Super 8, Days Inn, Country Inn Suites, Holiday Inn Express and the Whiteside County Housing Authority. Meanwhile, the police department is asking members of the community to no longer donate to those who have been displaced by the fire. In a news release Tuesday, the department said the community response has been overwhelming, and no further donations of clothing or personal items are being accepted since the current needs have been met. The department also asks that donations not be dropped off at the hotels, which are not equipped for handling such donations.

Arrangements are being made for donations at Sauk Valley Bank, which should be in place on Thursday, March 11.
