Hot, stormy weather in Iowa's forecast for Thursday

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa could see plenty of hot, then stormy weather on Thursday.

The National Weather Service says record highs and dangerous heat indexes of 105 to 110 are likely in an area from from Omaha through Des Moines and Ames.

A Heat Advisory will be in effect for Central, Southwest and Western Iowa from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

The Weather Service says Sioux City and Cedar Rapids/Iowa City will be a little cooler, but still heat index readings will be near 100.

Quad Cities, Dubuque, and far Eastern Iowa into Illinois will be much cooler.

The Weather Service says there is some relief in store--Iowa could see temperatures in the 70's next week.

Along with the heat, the Weather Service says thunderstorm chances return to the state beginning Wednesday and continuing through Thursday night.

They say the most likely time for thunderstorm activity will be mid-afternoon through the evening hours Thursday.

Expect the highest thunderstorm chances across North Central into Eastern Iowa with lower chances to the south and east.

Some of the storms will have the potential to become severe and produce large hail and damaging wind gusts.
