The signs welcoming you to Bettendorf remind you that you're entering the "The Premier City". That moniker has always made me chuckle a little bit. Full disclosure: I live in Bettendorf. I love Bettendorf. But Premier City? It feels a touch too fancy. We might as well have a sign that says "You're In Bettendorf, LA-DEE-DAH!" One could be forgiven if they expected to be asked if they had any Grey Poupon at every Bettendorf red light.
But the city is working very hard to make its downtown a premier destination. I guess that makes sense as the new I-74 Bridge provides an opportunity to hit the reset button on a downtown that ranks dead last in my entirely unscientific Quad City "It Factor" poll. Does Bettendorf even HAVE a downtown? Sure, I guess so.
Big (and pricey) improvements are coming and you'll see it starting this summer with the $400,000 City Hall Plaza and a million dollar Riverfront Jetty. Isle of Capri is fronting $750,000 for the jetty so the city "only" has to cough up $250,000. Bettendorf is FINALLY getting that fountain people have been BEGGING for.
The city has published this video to help us visualize what we're going to be paying for. This is what the"Premier" downtown will look like when everything is done in 2021.
