The world may have changed dramatically yesterday. Google used their I/O developer conference to reveal some incredible updates coming soon to Google Home and Assistant. Maybe too soon.
Google Duplex is able to make phone calls for you and talk to the person on the other end to schedule appointments and make reservations. What's amazing (and terrifying) is the way it's able to make the phone calls and interact with humans in a manner that's so natural sounding the person on the other end of the line has no idea they're talking to artificial intelligence. This is light years ahead of your friends Alexa or Siri.
It's stunning how natural (complete with "umms" and "hmmms") the computer's speech is. I would have assumed we were years away from this kind of AI/human interaction but here we are. Google is set to roll this out in the next few weeks. As cool as this Duplex system is, I'm worried about this brave new world. How long before Google releases a AM Talk Show Host version of this app?
