With apologies to the band Spirit, there's a story out of Italy that's nature's way of telling us something's right. After a 547 year absence, the beavers have returned to Italy. Mama Mia!
Could this be a harbinger of a new age of peace, love and understanding? Scientists in Northern Italy were studying otters via a webcam when to their collective shock they discovered...a beaver! It's the first beaver seen in Italy since 1472. Back then, beavers were hunted as a "white meat" that Catholics were allowed eat on Friday. The Italians got busy eating so much beaver that the local population was destroyed. Until now.
When I look back on all the fish sticks and grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup I ate on Fridays during Lent, I wonder why we never went to a Knights of Columbus Beaver Buffet.
