When nearly three dozen Chicago Aldermen have been convicted of crimes since the 1970's, it should not be a surprise when an alderman is arrested on suspicion of a crime.
But Alderman Ed Burke was charged with extortion according to a federal complaint unsealed Thursday in Cook County. Burke has been on the council in Chicago for 50 years, chaired its finance committee for three decades, and now he faces a 20-year sentence if convicted.
Meanwhile, in Chicago's First Ward - the Wicker Park neighborhood - there is an alderman who is doing it right and he happens to be from the Quad Cities. Joe Moreno grew up in Moline, graduated from Moline High School and Augustana College, and since 2010 Moreno has been serving the city of Chicago as an Alderman.
