Having been accused of breaking into six Ann Arbor businesses and being sentenced to probation, Matthew Jonathan Gibbins has been arrested after being accused of breaking into three more.

The 43-year-old was arraigned on Friday, May 13th on new breaking and entering charges after he was arrested on suspicion of breaking into three Ann Arbor businesses in rapid succession.

A call was made to the police at 9:35 p.m. Thursday, May 12th to the Vitamin Shop at 3365 Washtenaw Ave. after the alarm was set off reporting a break-in, shares the Ann Arbor Police Department.

When officers arrived, the glass door to the business had been smashed with an object and it was visible that someone had entered the business attempting to break the cash register, according to the police report.

While examining the damage on the scene, officers saw that a nearby Honey Baked Ham shop appeared to have been broken into as well.

Roughly 30 minutes later, yet another call was made to the police as an alarm sounded at a Bagel Fragel reporting a break-in.

After security footage was reviewed from all locations and based on prior arrests, the suspect was identified as Gibbins, who was later located and arrested after attempting to flee pursuing officers.

Gibbins is in the Washtenaw County Jail presently with a $5,000 bond in place.

He was recently sentenced in February to two years’ probation after he plead no contest to the three counts of breaking and entering in return for the other three to be dismissed, court records reveal.

Gibbins was facing six felony breaking and entering charges in connection with a series of break-ins reported between October 9th and 11th in downtown Ann Arbor. He was accused of breaking into six downtown Ann Arbor businesses in a two-block range, smashing his way into each establishment, breaking the cash register and stealing cash being stored inside, police said.
