Still time to plant trees!

My youngest son still has a few trees to plant from the October tranche we purchased, so, better late than never! We'll be outside in his backyard planting a variety of trees, but some have asked, "Isn't it too late to plant trees right now?" The short answer is, "no."

As long as the soil is workable, you should be good. I go by the 4-inch soil temp, and this shows we're still well above freezing, and with warmer days in the near future, we can still get water into the subsoil to keep them from desiccating over the winter.

We have a battery powered auger, which will drill the initial hole. Then, we'll follow up with a spade to widen it to about 12' wide and 10" deep so that the crown isn't covered.

UPDATE: Done with the planting and it was successful! The terrain was challenging, but we finished before the sun went down. I had never planted a tree before this last fall. Now, it seems I can't get enough of it! I feel like a Johnny Appleseed of sorts.

Anyway, the tree planting season is about donw, so we'll get some more and plant in the spring. Meanwhile, please water your newly planted trees up until the 4 inch soil temp gets to 34, or so, because that will mean the top of the ground will just run the water off and make it freeze in pools.
