New Illinois gun law requires more certification, alarms, record-keeping

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois - Gun dealers are sorting through new Illinois gun regulations.

The Firearm Dealer License Certification Act was signed a year ago to get illegal guns off the street, and is in effect as of Friday January 17, 2020.

The law includes new regulations dealing with items such as definitions and security requirements.

It also requires anyone or any business dealing with the selling, leasing, or transferring of firearms to go through an added layer of certification to sell guns. Gun dealers must have not only a federal license but also a State of Illinois certification.

Shops must also have an alarm system, and an electronic records system to track guns and gun sales.

Some shop owners say the new requirements are costly.

The new regulations will expire after 150 days, when a final set of rules should be available for gun dealers
