Bettendorf Burglary Suspect Gets Suspended Prison Sentence

BETTENDORF, Iowa - A Davenport man accused of attempted robbery of the Tobacco Outlet Plus at 2312 State Street in Bettendorf on August 21, 2019 is given a suspended four year prison sentence. Instead, 51 year old William Bartmess was given two years’ probation.

KWQC TV6 reports that Bartmess pleaded guilty to assault and weapons charges, both aggravated misdemeanors. The 1st degree robbery charge was dismissed.

Court documents show that Bartmess was wearing a ski mask and socks on his hands when he walked into the store. He was armed with a knife and demanded money. The clerk refused and Bartmess left the store on foot. Police say he was found about a block away and had the mask, socks and knife in his pocket.
