Big Welcome Home For "Larry The Flagman"

LITTLE YORK, Illinois - It was a very busy day for Larry Eckhardt of Little York, Illinois.

KWQC TV6 reports "Larry the Flagman" was given an escort from the University of Iowa to his home. Eckhardt has been battling throat cancer and spent nearly a month in the Iowa City hospital.

Eckhardt earned his name as the "Flagman" for placing nearly a half million flags across the country to honor fallen service members, first responders, police officers and firefighters.

A number of people cheered Eckhardt on as he was placed in an ambulance for his ride home. About two dozen volunteers were also busy the night before placing flags on the road leading to his apartment.

Eckhardt is a veteran and served in the Marines in the 1970's.

Eckhardt's family says they are accepting donations to assist in his medical expenses. Donations can be sent to Farmers Merchants Bank of Illinois or by calling 309-584-4146.
