Iowa Passes 18,000 COVID-19 Cases, Approaching 500 Deaths

DES MOINES, Iowa - There are 18,220 cases of COVID-19 in Iowa as of early Wednesday morning, a rise of 592 from early Tuesday. The state has a total of along with a total of 481 deaths, an increase of 21 from 24 hours earlier.

The state reports 139,124 people have been tested for the virus, with 120,482 testing negative. There have been 9,849 recoveries. The COVID-19 recovery rate in Iowa is 54 percent.

There have been outbreaks at 37 long term care centers in the state, including at seven facilities in Polk County, and at five in Linn County. Long term care centers account for 256 deaths, representing 53 percent of the deaths overall.

Polk County has the most COVID-19 case in Iowa with 3,847, and about eight out of every 1,000 people being infected.

Buena Vista has replaced Louisa County, for the state's highest transmission rate - with 3,820 cases per 100,000 residents. Buena Vista in on a FEMA list of the top 10 counties in the nation with growing cases of COVID-19 in the past two weeks, based on cases per 100,000.

There are 393 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Iowa, with 109 in ICU. Sixty-six patients are on ventilators.
