A decision was made in a lawsuit against the state and former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad. A jury awarded a former state employee $1.5 million in a discrimination lawsuit. They found Chris Godfrey proved his claim that Branstad tried to get him to quit. When he didn't, his pay was cut in 2011.
The money was awarded for discrimination based on sexual orientation, retaliation and violation of his constitutional rights.
Branstad denied knowing that Godfrey was gay when he asked for his resignation.
In the end, Iowa taxpayers will be responsible for the millions of dollars in attorney fees for both Branstad and Godfrey.
