Law Enforcement Cleared In Maquoketa Man's Death

MAQUOKETA, Iowa - An investigation into the death of a man being taken into custody last June is complete.

A Maquoketa Police officer and a Jackson County Sheriff's deputy were attempting to arrest Drew Edwards after an altercation at a home on West Apple Street.

Reports show that Edwards was combative and officers used a taser. That process didn't work and law enforcement used force to hold him down and handcuff him.

A short time later, Edwards showed signs of a medical problem and an ambulance was called. He later died.

An autopsy shows that Edwards died of cardiac arrest and he also had met, ecstasy and marijuana in his system.

A review by the Muscatine County attorney states they reviewed the body camera footage and determined that the officers’ actions were lawful.
