Illinois businesses risk misdemeanor charge if they defy stay-at-home order

Misdemeanor charges could be filed against Illinois businesses that defy new emergency rules under Governor J.B. Pritzker's stay-at-home order.

On Friday, the governor's office filed the new emergency rules, but a bipartisan committee of state legislators still has to review the rules on Wednesday. If the committee doesn't reject the new rules, they'll remain in effect for 150 days. Defiance of the stay-at-home order rules would be a Class A misdemeanor, which is punishable by a fine between $75 and $2,500.

Some Illinois Republicans are calling the move an overreach of power by Pritzker.
