(Des Moines, IA) -- The Des Moines Women's Club is hosting its 115th annual art exhibition at Hoyt Sherman Place starting Sunday, March 5th. Event co-chair Judy Frank says the exhibit is ingrained in the club's history.
"These women started with the idea that they need to support all sorts of arts, but especially art," Frank said. "That's why they started raising money, they started buying art." She says much of the residential collection on display at Hoyt Sherman Place was acquired during the early 1900s. The annual gallery was held in various, smaller locations before the group was able to start using the late Major Hoyt Sherman's home.
Over 140 entries for professional and nonprofessional artists have been submitted for this year's exhibition. The event is free and opens with a tea social and awards ceremony on Sunday, March 5th, where the results of the judging will be announced. This display lasts through the week and can be viewed by the public from 10 AM to 4 PM Monday, March 6th, through Saturday, March 11th, and from 1 to 3 PM on Sunday, March 12th.
