(Savanna, IL) -- A former World War I munitions testing and storage site on the Mississippi River north of the Quad Cities could become a barge port.
The Savanna Army Depot was closed 26 years ago, but a local development group believes turning the site into a port could attract jobs.
A Quad City Times report says environmental agencies and some residents believe disturbing contaminants from mustard gas storage could cause harm to the area which is now mostly a federal Fish & Wildlife Refuge.
The U.S. Army will decide the fate of the land.
Comments on the plan can be submitted until February 2nd on the Corps of Engineers website.
