(Iowa) -- A new national study looks at income growth in all 50 states, and Iowa ranks low on the list.

The Urban Institute examined data from the U.S. Census Bureau on changes in household income from 1970 to 2023. In Iowa during that time, household income grew by 20.4%, well below the national average of 32%. Income for bachelor's degree holders rose 22% between 1970 and 2023. During that time, incomes rose 6% for Iowans age 64 and older and 4% for the state's foreign-born population. However, incomes for manufacturing workers fell 13% from 1970-2023, and incomes for Iowans age 19 and younger fell by 4%.

In 1970, Iowa had the 22nd highest household income of any state in the country at $59,325. By 2023, the state fell to 33rd highest at $71,433.
