(Des Moines, IA) -- A bill designed to strengthen education credentials and employment eligibility is advancing through the Iowa Senate.

Senate Study Bill 3015 would require the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners to require proof from applicants for that they are legal to live and work in the U.S. The bill would apply to all new or renewing licenses.

The bill comes days after former Des Moines School Superintendent Ian Roberts pled guilty to lying about his immigration status on an employment form, after being arrested by ICE last fall.

The Guyana native was given a final removal order by an immigration judge in 2024. He was hired by the Des Moines School Board the year prior.

Another Senate bill, 3035, would require county auditors to use a federal database to verify voter citizenship and eligibility.

The bills passed a subcommittee and now go to the Senate Education Committee.
