(Iowa) -- The Iowa Attorney General's Office announces the top 10 most reported scams in Iowa.
2025 was the second year in a row with an increasing number of scams and complaints reported in Iowa. Last year, the Attorney General's Office Consumer Protection Division received more than 4,000 complaints. Of those reported complaints, the top ten most common include:
- Used Auto and vehicle repair: 783 complaints including calls for things like faulty repair work, financing problems, or failure to disclose prior damage
- Imposter scams: 398 complaints including fake job offers, romance scams, and IRS or social security scams, often through calls, texts, emails or social media.
- Internet: 319 complaints including disputes with internet services providers, reports of locked or hacked social media accounts, unsolicited emails
- Home improvement: 247 complaints including contractors failing to complete a job, low quality of workman ship, or problems with sale or installation of solar panels
- Housing and Realty: 244 complaints including misleading information or hidden fees involving rental homes, mobile homes, and home building
- Personal Goods: 237 complaints involving problems with purchasing items like food, clothing, and personal items
- Personal services: 215 complaints including problems with time share companies, delivery services, and travel-related services
- Home Goods and Services: 192 complaints involving false advertising, late delivery times, and refusals to replace things like furniture and appliances
- Lending: 175 complaints involving credit card companies, peer-to-peer payment apps, and private loans
- Healthcare: 151 complaints involving health insurance payments, deceptive treatments, or false medical products
