(Des Moines, IA) -- The amount of snow that fell across Central Iowa in the past day broke records.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Alexis Jimenez says 5.9 inches of snow fell in Des Moines, breaking the old record of daily snow fall amount of 5.8 inches set back in 1919.

She says another daily record was broken in Waterloo, where 5.8 inches fell. The previous record of 5 inches was set in 1937.

Other snow totals for the region include Ankeny with 10.5 inches, Johnston with 8.7 inches and 7.25 inches of snow in West Des Moines.

Jimenez warns drivers to give snowplow crews time to clear the roads, as some surfaces melted and refroze again under the snow pack, making for slick conditions through the weekend.
