Development of a major data center planned for Linn County may end up elsewhere without moving a single yard.
Google says its halting development plans for its $1-billion data center to pursue having the 545-acre site annexed by the city of Palo, a Cedar Rapids suburb.
The Linn County Board of Supervisors recently passed an ordinance requiring extensive water usage studies for data centers.
Annexation of the site by Palo would remove Google from Linn County's oversight, and the water study.
The city of Palo now has to move the annex proposal through its public approval process.
