(Des Moines, IA) -- Annual inflation soared above 4 percent in the Midwest in April, driving up basic costs for Iowans.

A Common Sense Institute study shows the typical Iowa household is paying over $1,400 a month more than in 2020.

Ben Murrey of CSI says that's due to the surge in prices for housing, transportation and food.

He says while inflation in the Midwest is trending higher than the rest of the country, Iowa remains the most affordable state to live in nationally.

However, Murrey says there are Iowans who aren't able to keep up with the rising prices and stagnant job market
