(Davenport, IA) -- Work has begun on a quiet zone for trains between Mound and Marquette Streets in downtown Davenport.

Extra safety measures are being put in place at eight rail crossings to prevent vehicles and people from going around safety gates.

Once completed sometime in August, the nearly two dozen trains that go through downtown Davenport daily won't have to blow their horns.

The upgrades are being paid for with federal and state grants, and money from a settlement with the CPKC railroad.
