(Iowa) -- Nearly 39 million motorists are hitting the roads over the long, Memorial Day weekend.

Gas prices are up by about 75 cents a gallon in Iowa compared to a month ago.

Nick Jarmusz of Triple-A Midwest says prices spiked to over $5.00 a gallon in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine and it had little effect on travel.

The average price of unleaded gas in Iowa is $4.28 a gallon, up ten cents from a week ago and $1.34 higher than one year ago.

Jarmusz says travel demand remains strong this year despite higher fuel prices and inflation.

A total of 45-million Americans are expected to travel by plane, train and automobile this weekend, the highest total on record.

The Memorial Day Travel period begins Thursday and ends on Monday.
