(Iowa) -- The number of burglaries reported in Iowa is up this year compared to last year.
A new report from insurance website Compare the Market examined data from the FBI and found there were 4,041 burglaries reported in Iowa last year, compared to 2,497 reported in the first five months of this year. That's 38% behind last year's total for the year. The study also identified the top twenty cities in Iowa for reported burglaries, using the most recent available data, in this case from 2024. Those top twenty cities include:
- Des Moines - 977 reported burglaries
- Davenport - 626 reported burglaries
- Sioux City - 393 reported burglaries
- Cedar Rapids - 375 reported burglaries
- Waterloo - 335 reported burglaries
- Council Bluffs - 284 reported burglaries
- Dubuque - 135 reported burglaries
- Iowa City - 122 reported burglaries
- Ames - 112 reported burglaries
- Ottumwa - 110 reported burglaries
- Clinton - 109 reported burglaries
- Fort Dodge - 107 reported burglaries
- Marshalltown - 84 reported burglaries
- Mason City - 83 reported burglaries
- West Des Moines - 81 reported burglaries
- Burlington - 65 reported burglaries
- Muscatine - 58 reported burglaries
- Bettendorf - 57 reported burglaries
- Ankeny - 49 reported burglaries
- Urbandale - 40 reported burglaries
Nationally, New York is seeing the largest increase in reported burglaries compared to the other 49 states at 17,052 this year, 60% ahead of last year's entire total of 10,632.
