Iowa delegation votes for debt deal after Speaker folds on carbon pipeline

Yesterday Iowa's Congressional delegation voted as one for Kevin McCarthy's debt ceiling increase, after a tense meeting in the Speaker's office produced a concession to restore a tax credit program aimed specifically at carbon sequestration pipelines.

McCarthy did not have the votes without Iowa's delegation as four conservative members of the House voted against the Bill. They were Representatives Andy Biggs of Arizona, Tim Burchett of Tennessee, Ken Buck of Colorado and Matt Gaetz of Florida.

After the vote, which McCarthy won 217-215, the Iowa delegation of Hinson, Miller-Meeks, Feenstra and Nunn, issued a joint statement which did not even mention the pipeline concession and instead focussed on biofuel tax credits.

"The biofuels industry drives the Iowa economy and is vital to our nation's energy security. We are proud to deliver a major victory for this industry and our whole state in these negotiations. Since this proposal was unveiled, our delegation has stood united for Iowa’s farmers and producers fighting to amend the bill to protect biofuels tax credits. Having successfully amended the bill to protect funding for these tax credits, our delegation will vote for this legislation, which is a starting point to avoid a default and cut wasteful spending."

The carbon sequestration pipeline is hated by many Iowans with almost 80% in Polls saying they oppose Eminent Domain for them. Some Iowans really don't like the pipeline because they simply don't want it on their land and feel they will be forced to accept it through Eminent Domain, and others because they believe it is dangerous.

What do you think? Did Iowa's Congressional delegation force Speaker McCarthy to accept the carbon sequestration pipeline for their debt ceiling votes? And if so, why are they so passionate about something that is widely disliked in the State?
